How To Create A Magical Garden And Outside Space

If you’re here, I know you are interested in learning how to create a magical garden! But before we dive in, I’d like to ask you a question first – are you a flower lover?

Do you find yourself captivated by the intoxicating scent of a blooming hyacinth, rose, lilac, or honeysuckle? I absolutely adore flowers and can’t seem keep my nose out of them! Since my move from New York to sunny Southwest Florida, I’ve had to adjust my gardening choices to cope with the intense sun, heat and humidity. These days, I enjoy growing plumeria, orchids, and different varieties of fruit on our tropical farm.

If you’ve ever dreamed of creating a stunning, lush garden and outdoor space that resonates with your feminine soul, you’re in luck! Whether you prefer a romantic, modern, or exotic style, I promise you can craft an outside oasis that tickles your fancy and satisfies your desire for a beauty-filled goddess lifestyle.

A present day goddess knows the power of reconnecting with nature to recharge, rejuvenate, and find inspiration. Gaia’s energy is boundless, comforting, nurturing, healing, and abundant. By immersing yourself in a magnificent garden or outdoor space, you can feel refreshed, as if you’ve enjoyed a restful ten-hour sleep, and be inspired to manifest and bring your dreams to life!

Creating your magical garden and tranquil outdoor space is simpler than you might think. All you need are some plants, whimsical or architectural elements, some crystals, your imagination, a bit of elbow grease, basic garden tools, and gardening gloves.

Let’s dive into the steps for creating your magical garden:

Step 1: Find A Spot That Calls To You

Look for a spot on your property that energetically calls out to you. It could be a place with a majestic old oak tree or flowering trees that serve as the perfect backdrop for your magical garden. Alternatively, you may prefer a blank canvas where you can start your masterpiece. Begin by clearing away any clutter or debris that’s obstructing your view of the space’s potential. Dispose of any trash, and for items that break down like dead leaves and small sticks, consider using a composter. I intentionally try and reduce our household waste to a minimum, so I compost as much as possible (kitchen scraps, cardboard, paper, etc.). If you don’t have one, below is a link to the one I use and love.

Step 2: Visit a Local Nursery Or Plant Swap for Blooming Delights

An abundance of blooming flowers is essential for creating a magical and enchanted garden reminiscent of vibrant English gardens. Green plants like hostas or ferns can add a lush, woodland feel to shady areas. Whenever possible, choose native plants and flowers. They require less water than invasive species, making them eco-friendly and cost-effective too!

As an Herbalist, Holistic Health Expert, and Metaphysical Practitioner, I always plant a variety of medicinal and culinary herbs to make lotions and potions. Here are some flower and herb suggestions that thrive in most planting zones to get you started:

  • Rosemary, Bay Leaves, Lavender, Thyme, Mint, Mugwort, Parsley, Sage, Basil, Bush Roses, Catnip, Johnny-Jump-Ups, Pansies, Foxgloves, Coral Bells, Primroses, Periwinkle, Poppy, Coneflower (white or purple), Vervain, Violets, Ferns, Bluebells and Sea Lavender.

Subtropical growing is another story, I cannot get many of those plants to grow here in Zone 10a. Zone 10a consists of parts of California and Hawaii, in addition to coastal Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. In this planting zone, I can grow beauties like:

  • Frangipani, Hibiscus, Jasmine, Ginger, Bird of Paradise, Orchids, Bromiliads, Pineapples, Bananas, Coffee, Yerba Mate, Turmeric, Lantana, Verbena, etc.

Once you plant everything its time to embellish your garden with some sparkle … reflective materials like glass twinkle in the sun and the moonlight! I always add some architectural interest too, like a statue or two (or twenty 😉 …) plus some crystals to activate and energize the garden space.

Step 3: Add Sparkle and Architectural Interest

Once you’ve planted your flora, it’s time to embellish your magical garden with some sparkle! Reflective materials like glass can twinkle in both sunlight and moonlight, adding an ethereal touch. I always recommend incorporating architectural elements like statues to infuse a space with intrigue. And don’t forget about crystals! Crystals can activate the energy of your garden. Let’s explore a few crystals suitable for your magical garden:

  • Clear Quartz: This versatile crystal stimulates growth, promotes healing, and amplifies energy. It can also help tomato plants resist pests and diseases.
  • Moss Agate: Known as the gardener’s stone, Moss Agate promotes a connection to the earth, balances energy, and adds vitality to your garden.
  • Green Aventurine: With its vibrant green hues, Green Aventurine promotes health, harmony, and new growth in your garden.
  • Tree Agate: This captivating stone creates calming and harmonious energies, drowning out negativity in your garden.
  • Malachite: Symbolizing fertility and abundance, Malachite stimulates new growth and transformation.
  • Moonstone: Associated with the moon, Moonstone brings peace, relaxation, and fertility to your garden.
  • Rhyolite: With its colorful streaks and blotches, Rhyolite adds fortitude, balance, and perseverance to your garden.
  • Citrine: This sunny stone promotes happiness and abundance, dispels negativity, and adds a cheerful accent to your garden.
  • Tiger’s Eye: Enhancing strong root growth and success, Tiger’s Eye adds a touch of harmony and protection to your garden.

Feel free to choose any stones that resonate with you or hold special meaning.

Step 4: Unleash Your Creativity with Treasures and Elemental Features

To truly embrace the essence of nature and create a harmonious and balanced enchanted space, consider adding representations of each element.

For the element of Air, incorporate wind chimes that create a gentle melody, feathers that dance with the breeze, and the soothing aroma of incense.

Fire can be represented by a mesmerizing fire pit, flickering candles, torches that illuminate the night, or enchanting string lights.

The element of Water can be introduced through a serene birdbath, a tranquil fountain, a small pond teeming with life, or any other water feature that brings a sense of calm and serenity.

To honor the element of Earth, scatter rocks and crystals throughout your space, display potted plants that ground and connect you to nature, and adorn your garden with captivating sculptures.

Finally, acknowledge the element of Spirit by creating a dedicated meditation area, displaying sacred symbols that hold personal meaning, hanging prayer flags that flutter with intention, and incorporating wind spinners that evoke a sense of ethereal energy. By incorporating representations of each element, you invite a deeper connection to nature and infuse your enchanted space with a truly magical atmosphere.

Air: wind chimes, feathers, incense.

Fire: fire pit, candles, torches, string lights.

Water: birdbath, fountain, small pond, water feature.

Earth: rocks, crystals, potted plants, garden sculptures.

Spirit: meditation area, sacred symbols, prayer flags, wind spinners.

If you lack space for a pond, don’t worry! Install a fountain instead. Plug-in fountains come in various shapes and sizes, and the sound of running water adds a zen, ethereal, relaxing, and magical ambiance. Below is a tabletop fountain that I think is lovely and zen.

A favorite pastime for me is to explore antique stores and thrift shops in search of unique objects, a hobby I affectionately call “treasure hunting.” My suggestion is to let your creativity flow by incorporating these treasures into your garden.

Step 5: Select Seating to Match Your Theme

To complete your garden, choose seating that aligns with your desired theme. Wicker and wrought iron blend beautifully into enchanted and magical gardens. If you seek a more exotic Moroccan feel, explore options like hanging candle-lit lanterns in bold colors or better yet, solar powered lanterns from low-hanging tree branches.

When in need of garden design inspiration, I often visit Home Goods (one of my guilty pleasure stores). Stepping into that store ignites my imagination like a child in a candy store, and ideas flow like a river!
