Selenite: Why I Have Chunks Of It Everywhere!
Selenite is one of the essential ten workhorse stones I believe everyone should own!
If you’re wondering what the other nine crystals on my list are – click here.
What Is Selenite?
Selenite is actually a mineral gypsum, not a stone or crystal, and it instills deep peace and tranquility wherever it is placed.
Selenite is known as an “emotional cleanser” for the mind, body, spirit, and outer environment. I have pieces of Selenite all around my living and working spaces.
Selenite is a commonly used crystal in Feng Shui, probably because it has one of the finest and highest spiritual vibrations and is often used at the Crown Chakra for meditation, angelic consciousness, channeling and the highest wisdom.
Because of it’s energetic effectiveness, Selenite can be placed in every room of the house, in order to emanate the most uplifting and positive vibrations for every activity of life.
Bigger IS better when it comes to Selenite!
I always recommend acquiring the largest pieces one’s budget can accommodate and multiple pieces. Wherever Selenite is placed, it counteracts any negative vibration and protects against any negative influence.
Morocco is the Selenite Capital of the World but it is also found in Mexico, South America, USA, Australia and Madagascar. The shape is chunky log-like … the top and bottom surface are somewhat smooth (from the saw) and the back and sides are more rough, natural unpolished material.
Depending on the shape they may stand up on their own but not all do that because they are wider and thinner. Each piece of Selenite is a one-of-a-kind item, no two are identical! Selenite has a wonderful white, moon-like translucency… so beautiful, I absolutely LOVE it!
Use Selenite for aura cleansing, medicine bags, Feng Shui, healing grid or a healing practice. Selenite is very helpful in Feng Shui cures too – use it with a small Black Tourmaline or Black Obsidian on top of it and you’ll create Yin/Yang balance for any room. Pretty nifty right?
Selenite is also a great “emotional cleanser” for whenever you might be feeling overwhelmed, sad or just ragged from worry or hurt feelings.
Cleaning And Care Of Selenite
If your Selenite gets dirty or scratched (it has a very soft surface), you can re-polish it with a nail buffer (not a nail fine) or soft cloth.
Selenite is soluble in water, so it is easily shaped and polished with just a little dampness. However, please don’t soak Selenite in water because it may disappear! Selenite is all natural, grown from the Earth so each one is different, no two are alike!

Where To Purchase Selenite
I purchase my Selenite from a few different places; Ebay, Amazon or local fairs. New Age stores tend to really jack their prices up for retail, so I like to order my stones and crystals online.
Zen With Gems is my trusted place to purchase crystals – click here to visit the shop on Etsy.

This sounds like a great one to have. I’m going to go look for some at my local new age store. Thanks for the info, Lisa Marie!
You’re most welcome my lovely! I purchase my gemstones, etc. at a wholesale supplier here on Long Island and on eBay or Etsy. There are some gorgeous, magical shops on Etsy that are totally worth perusing…
I would like to get the full benefits of Selenite. Can you please share how to grid a bedroom with selenite?
Is it okay to put in my children’s bedroom?
Hi Marie! Thank you for your comment. I will write an article about it for the blog – you inspired me and YES selenite is absolutely wonderful for a child’s room 😉
I have a huge piece of selenite that came out of the caves on Lake Mead in Nevada. I’ve had it outside in the doorway to our home and realized after 8 years of being in South Carolina, that it has shrunk significantly and looks dirty. I would like to put it into the house to get it out of the elements, but I am curious to WHERE in the house i should place it. I have been gathering chakra stones and crystals and my collection is around 60ish stones. I would like direction and advise to place my magnificent crystal. Thank you 🙂
Terrie
Terri, Selenite is a gypsum so it does not do well out in the elements, especially water, it will dissolve. I have Selenite pieces sitting on all of my altar spaces and on both nightstands in my bedroom. Selenite is a wonderful addition to any space, it’s a magical stone!
Hi there
Everything has it’s time and when time is.Things will come. I am new to Selenite but have been in to crystals and rocks for 20 years a long with healing and spirit things. But tinme has just resent come for me to open my self up for the vibrations of Selenite. So nw I can’t get enough of it. it comes to me in my inner world and show me things about my furture. It heals and correct my thoughts about a subject. God bless for Selenite right. : – ) ANyways. the most important thing working with a Selenite, is to connect with it and let make the changes within one self that needs to be change. Have a great week, month and year ofcoyrse. Many blessings. Angelina
Thank you dear one and the same to you. May your pieces of Selenite continue to bless you each and every day! xo
Hi,
I keep a 2 foot log under my pillow. It was a gift from a Reiki practitioner, and what a miracle. My story is profound but i will not share it here, i will let the Selenite speak for itself. Blessings friends :o)
I recently bought a piece of selenite, but it is very greasy… I know selenite isn’t typically greasy, so is my selenite crying or is there a way to clean off the grease?
Thank you,
Great question Erin! As a matter of fact Selenite can feel greasy OR it could be melting. Selenite is a gypsum, so don’t clean it by soaking it in water – it will melt! If your Selenite is crying, perhaps it was kept in a humid place?
Great article. I’ve heard that you can leave selenite in your windowsills to bring extra light into your home. I’m just wondering if you can leave selenite in the sun all day like that. I don’t want to ruin my new beauties!!
Your Selenite should be just fine on the windowsill Rachel – just don’t soak it in water to clean it, it’s a gypsum and will dissolve!
I purchased a Selenite lamp. Is it ok to place it on my fireplace mantle close to the television, dvd player and satellite box? If so, will it still cleanse my other stones properly?
There’s different schools of thought about stones and electronics. What feels best for you to do? I think close by is okay. To thoroughly cleanse your stones, lay them on top of the selenite.
Hi, can you send me links to online stores that sells authentic crystals? And can you also give me tips on how to check if a selenite is authentic. Thank you!
You can find my favorite places to purchase crystals and gemstones here: https://www.goddesslifestyleplan.com/lisas-magickal-resources/ – I completely trust you’ll get beautiful and authentic stones from any of my recommended shops!
I have a piece of Tourmaline that is growing on and around what looks like a small selenite tower. Do you know if Tourmaline forms around Selenite in this way?. Thank you and many blessings. I have been a Selenite lover and collector for many years. Hanna
Thank you for your question Hanna. I’m not an expert on gemstone formation by any means, but I do know that Tourmaline can grow with Quartz, Mica & Feldspar. I have yet to come across a piece of Selenite with Tourmaline. You’re specimen sounds magical – lucky YOU!
Hi, I was wondering about when you get your new piece of Selenite, does it need charging?or cleansing in that form? (Other than physically cleaning)
Thank you.
Hi Zia – I like to smudge all of my gemstones when I get them home to cleanse their energy – you can do that with your Selenite. Please don’t soak your Selenite in water, it’s a gypsum, so it will dissolve. I charge my Selenite under the Full Moon!
Hi! So glad I stumbled on your site! I foolishly didn’t do my research and ran my selenite under water to cleanse it. Have I ruined it?? Thank you!!
Running Selenite under water should be okay Kerry. It’s the soaking of Selenite that will dissolve it!
I’m just starting out buying my first crystals, and I purchased Selenite because of its ability to cleanse other crystals. I chose a small 4″ Selenite tower (which I’ve already purchased online but haven’t received yet), though, and now I’m wondering if I’ve made a big mistake. Is it possible to cleanse crystals using one single Selenite tower, or should the tower only be used for creating a grid? If it is possible, how do I place the crystals so they will be cleansed? Can I place the tower on its side and line crystals up on it, or should I leave it upright with the crystals circling the sides of the tower, with as much contact between the Selenite and crystals as I can manage? I don’t think I’m quite at the grid level yet, I just want to experiment with a few crystals and wanted a convenient way to cleanse them. I’m excited to find your website; I think I’ll be getting a lot of valuable information from it! Thank you!!
You’re most welcome! I think you made the perfect choice Maria. Put your Selenite tower on it’s side and line your crystals up on top of it. That will do the trick 😉
Hi – I received my 1st Selenite crystal today as a extra gift with a purchase, It made me interested and I came across your page. If you would be kind enough to ans my query I would really appreciate it. I want to add Selenite all around my house, what is best option placing it above every door in my house or place it on night stand in every room, can I carry this in my bag?
Thank you so much.
There’s no wrong place to put Selenite (except for in water – it will dissolve. Selenite is dense, so on a practical note – I wouldn’t want that falling on my head if you chose to put it above a door!
HI There
I was given a Selenite lamp, which I had not turned on for 2 days. When I got home from work today where it was standing the table, it had a wet ring around it and when I touched it it is total wet. Why is this? What must I do?
Since I have replace the bulb and turned it on the selenite crystal has gone dry.
Selenite is a gypsum, so it will “melt” – I suggest continuing to keep it dry and that should solve the wet, weeping issue you had.
Hi Lisa, thank you for your lovely info 🤗
At the end of November I walked into a crystal shop & bought a 6″ tall piece of Selenite – I had never seen any before but was completely captivated by its sheer beauty and the feeling that it was extremely special & highly spiritual (am I weird?!) A few days ago I became ill and felt very sick, I went to bed put on Michael Hammer’s Gift of the Archangels cd, & held my rose quartz which became red hot. A couple of hours later I still felt very sick & asked my husband to bring the Selenite. I had the feeling to lay it on my stomach but resisted for another half hour as it’s heavy. However, I eventually did and its hard to believe but my fingers pulsed & the sickness immediately disappeared. Is that possible? (Yes it happened but is that what Selenite does?) The following morning my throat was sore; so I held the Selenite against my neck, my fingers pulsed & after 20 Minutes the soreness also went. I currently have lost my voice due to the bug (or whatever I’ve got) but the Selenite seems to have ‘lost its power’ in terms of healing… I ask myself if I’ve dreamt it all, but my symptoms were real.. Have I broken the Selenite or done something wrong? I’m certainly very grateful & in complete awe of it & trying to find out more about Selenite hence stumbling across your site. Happy New Year to all 😊🙏 Namaste
Selenite is an incredibly magical stone. You can try re-activating by clanging tingsha bells 3 times OR the lack of healing might be that the piece of Selenite might have done it’s work and should be given back to Mama Earth. What happens if your selenite wands breaks? My daughter got into my things and broke it in half! 😖
Hi the tip of my selenite broke? What does that mean ? Does it still hold its healing properties ?? I litterally just bought it a month ago in Boston. And brought it to Georgia with me and it broke while getting in the car to head home to New York.
I share your love of Selenite, its just mesmerizing for me. I want to buy lots 🙂
I bought a Selenite wand and w/ o knowing ran it under cold tap water for like a few seconds. Did I harm its properties in any way?
I love selinite I have many around my house. I am a Reike Healer and also use crystals when giving Reike. I have a funny story. My first selinite wand I have used a lot it’s my favorite one. A couple of weeks ago I was using it on my feet they were crampy. After that it disappeared. My Husband and I looked all over for it. Last week I was doing laundry I always check in the washer before putting clothes in. I washed my Husbands work clothes put them in the dryer nothing was left in the washer I come back open the washer and there in the bottom is my wand staring at me. It’s a good size one about 2 inches across and about 9 inches long. I was like what the heck are you doing in the washer I took it out thinking oh my gosh is it going to dissolve. It flaked a little but has dried out and is fine I used it last night on my Husbands shoulder and it worked great. A friend of mine that works with crystals also said maybe it felt like your Husbands work clothes needed to be cleansed maybe he picked up some bad energy at work. I thought this was very cool. Just wanted to share with everyone. Love and light to everyone 🦋💕
I have bought a Selenite Lamp. Am I supposed to use a Incandescent bulb, which would emit some heat, or a cooler LED bulb?
I use a cooler LED bulb with Selenite Ivan.
Hello,
I’m interested in your story. I slept with selenite and had an awful nightmare. A shaman told me that it’s too powerful to sleep with and another practitioner told me it may just be bringing stuff to the surface. What is your take?
What hard science do you have that corroborates what you have stated about the properties of Selenite for emotional health
I don’t think there is hard science that proves selenite or any crystal for that matter cures anything however, science tells us that everything carries a vibration and I personally believe that some people can pick up on those vibrations. There are crystals that soothe, energize, etc. I would suggesting picking up some different crystals and seeing if some speak to you energetically or otherwise. Thanks for stopping by and commenting David!
If I have a raw selenite wand about 9 in Long but I want smaller pieces to place throughout my home and car and carry with me could I break this one down into smaller pieces or would it cancel its abilities.
Such a great question! I usually don’t intentionally break my crystals, however sometimes they break all on their own. Take a moment to hold the selenite wand and ask it the question, see what you feel. I have tiny little pieces of selenite called fairly wands – they are super tiny but I feel they are very potent energetically. I’d love to know what your wand tells you, so come on back and let me know…
[…] I felt intuitively called to use a photo of a Selenite heart from my crystal collection in this post. I absolutely LOVE it’s energy. Have you worked with Selenite? It’s one of favorite stones to work with. I talk all about Selenite and why I love it so much in this article. […]
Hi Lisa, I am in distress. I put my large selenite spheres outside with all my other stones to reenergize and they got wet and do not shine anymore. I am just sick about it as they are large and expensive and loved and I feel I have just ruined them. Can they be restored to their former shine? I did not know they were not to get wet. I feel like crying. I feel foolish I did not know how to properly care for my selenite. Can anyone help me?
Hi Sandra – I’m so sorry you’re in distress. I hope my suggestions help. I have found that using a soft, dry cloth or a nail buffer (not a nail file) and rubbing along with the grain of the crystal helps bring the shine back up. I would not recommend using any type of buffing compound as it is a very soft crystal. I also would avoid going across the grain of the crystal, as that can cause splintering. Wishing you luck in restoring the shine to your Selenite.
Hi Lisa,
I decided to turn my small upstairs porch area into a spiritual prayer and meditation space for my family and I to go to pray and meditate. I was drawn to a Selenite Lamp at a shop I went to and purchased it to place on my alter out on the porch, but want to make sure that it will be ok outside. Will this be ok?
Hi Catrina – thank you for your question. I believe you’ll be okay with a Selenite lamp on the porch. There are a few things regarding sunlight exposure to keep in mind when placing your crystals. Sun exposure can cause fading to your crystals as well as make them more brittle or extremely hot. Selenite is generally known to fade, crack and lose its luster with light. The color change will not effect the energy your crystal omits, however keep an eye on them and if you see some color change that you prefer to avoid place your stone in a place where there is indirect or dappled light.
Hi Lisa,
After using a large piece of selenite to cleanse my aura, I noticed a large dark spot in the rock that appeared to look like a small mouse was trapped inside. I felt disgusted when I saw it, but remembered that in the several years that I have had it, I never noticed it. I’m pretty positive that it wasn’t there before. Do you know what it could be, or mean?
Thank you.
Hi Meg. I must admit, this was something that I have never heard of before so I reached out to a business goddess sister who owns a crystal shop and here is her response, I hope it helps 💜
“I have never had this happen to me before but, I have heard about it. The mouse could be a metaphor, like there is something they feel trapped in, or they feel small in something. I know selenite really pulls the stings around your aura and clears you out, so in my opinion it has just been congested. I would cleanse the selenite by singing bowl vibration, moon light, partially sunny day for a little bit outside. Give it some balanced energy back. Just keep in mind selenite shouldn’t get wet and too much sun will yellow it. I usually don’t do sun with selenite, but for some reason feel it needs some sun energy. The dark spot my not go away, or it might. If after all the cleansing they still don’t feel right with using it then they should give it back to mama earth. Also maybe they should look up the metaphysical meaning of mouse, because I feel like there is a message with the mouse.”

Thank you, Lisa. I will take her advice. I have been really feeling drawn to giving it back to Mother Earth, but I wanted to bury it in a large planter or flower pot so it wouldn’t get wet in the elements, especially if it was buried in the Earth. I appreciate your assistance with this unusual situation. Namaste
You’re most welcome Meg. Hello!
I have a selenite tower and it keeps flaking off whenever I pick it up and I’m worried about accidentally ingesting it. I wash my fingers that touched the selenite tower but it never really comes off. I’m concerned about what to do. I wash my hands at least three times but it’s still there. Will I be ok?
Hey Sara, if you’re concerned about toxicity, I would do a little research about Selenite. Here’s a resource for you: https://www.gemsociety.org/article/gemstone-toxicity-table/. If you’re concerned, I suggest you wear rubber gloves when handling the selenite tower. This will keep any residue off of your fingers.
