What Is Sacred Space?
Sacred Definition: adj. worthy of or regarded with reverence, awe, or respect; holy.
Sacred space is any space or area that has been dedicated to a sacred (holy) purpose. An emphasis on sacred space is found in all of the world’s religions and traditions and they all have places set aside as holy, that they use for worship, prayer, and important rituals. The name for this space differs according to faith (church, mosque, synagogue, sanctuary, temple, nature, etc.), but the point remains the same: it is a place where believers can encounter the Divine in a special and powerful way.
Sacred space can be a quiet, inspiring space for rituals like meditation or yoga, a place to work your life magic, or a place in your home or outside in nature where you feel more connected to what’s meaningful in your life.
I believe that YOU are sacred space.
Your body houses your soul, and your soul is sacred… so therefore you are sacred space and your body… a temple.
Creating sacred space in your environment lets you express your human need for ongoing spiritual nourishment and empowerment and it reminds you of your divinity. You can create sacred space at home, at work or in a “third space” such as a hotel room when traveling, or outside in nature.
Your sacred space might contain a single object such as a statue, a crystal or gemstone, an altar you deliberately create in a special location and for a specific purpose, or it may be an entire room, a garden or if you’re anything like me, your entire home can become sacred space filled with consciously arranged furnishings, objects and decor that holds special meaning for you.
What Does “Sacred” or “Spiritual” Mean To You?
I have found that divine connection helps me feel more centered, grounded and authentically happy. Your definition of what’s sacred is as unique as your fingerprint, yet unlike your fingerprint, your personal ideas and expression of what is sacred can evolve and change over time. I know mine has in the past and I’m certain it will continue to do so!
When I first started on my spiritual journey, objects and “things” held sacred energy. I would find new crystals and gemstones… new statues and magical tools and they would take center stage in my sacred spaces. These days the sacred is not limited to objects and things in my environment, the sacred lives in my thoughts and feelings too. Spirituality is an evolution and your journey will reveal the next right step for you. I urge you to follow it and allow your spiritual practice to change and evolve over time just as you do.
What Will Your Sacred Space Provide You With?
Before you begin designing and creating your exterior sacred spaces, think about what purpose you’d like your it to provide and also decide how you want to use it.
Do you want to:
- Create a private sanctuary for meditation and prayer, or simply for quiet reflection?
- Find serenity while you’re at home?
- Amplify your health, vitality and wellness?
- Designate a shared space for connecting with others, or for ritual or ceremony?
- Co-create a family altar that continually evolves with spontaneous contributions from each member?
- Promote abundance and prosperity?
- Create a safe haven where you can feel supported and protected?
- Deepen intimacy through regular family time in a special place?
- Cultivate a deeper connection with the Divine?
- Etc.
Express Yourself & Activate Your Sensuality!
Make your sacred space personal. Choose the sounds, smells, looks and feels that are heavenly to you. Women are sensual creatures by nature, so I invite you to activate all your senses when planning your sacred spaces! Choose objects that give you energy, inspire you or help you get fully immersed in your sacred practice.
Also consider using a screen, curtain or other boundary to make your sacred space feel more contained, relaxing and personal.
Why Do You Want A Sacred Space?
Creating a sacred space can be something you do once in your lifetime or every day, alone or with loved ones. Get creative… here are some ideas:
Seasonal rituals to celebrate and commemorate:
- Changes of season
- Movements of the sun, moon or stars
- Endings and beginnings of any kind
- Anniversaries and special occasions
Specific, one-time events:
- To consecrate a new space or transform existing space
- To celebrate a relationship or a success
- To mark an important beginning or ending in your life
- To clarify an important decision or change
- To be more present or conscious in any aspect of your life

I love how you don’t limit sacred spaces Lisa. For most of my life I felt the connection to the Divine when I was out in the woods and near water. Took me a long time to understand this was perfectly fine although it was upsetting to some people who believed scared was only in Church or a Temple. I have been protecting my own little sacred space until recently when I realized how strong it was because it was within me to bring it, hold it and I owned it. I have been opening up my space more and more. I love how you describe your whole home being sacred as well as your body. LOVE this post!
Thank you Bonnie, I am so happy that this post served you, Loveliness! The woods are most sacred indeed – sacred space is where ever you feel connected to the Divine and always remember that YOU are sacred space. xo
How timely 🙂 I have just moved and have been slack setting up my sacred spaces as i no longer have a dedicated room. so i am making corners and today made one on my desk and in my studio. The beach is a sacred space and a wonderful meditation space for me too. Thanks for reaffirming and inspiring
blessing Suzie xx
YES Suzi!!! I’m so happy that my article inspired you to take action!!!
Hi Lisa!!
Like Bonnie I also love how you encourage readers to define sacred spaces for themselves and then create practices for imbue it with special meaning.
I especially love that your first call to action was for us to see our bodies as sacred spaces — yes, that really did blow my mind and I am going to make that concept my own, for sure!!
I really have to thank you for this post — you are such a gifted practitioner!! I really did FEEL my Divine Feminine wake up and cheer as I read it. Now I can’t wait to find more ways to keep her AWAKE and VITAL!!
Oh STACEY THANK YOU!!!! Your Inner Goddess is the most magical and sacred part of YOU! xoxo
Lisa, I love this, especially your opening paragraph. I really appreciate that you acknowledge that ALL religions honor sacred space. As a scholar of religion, I know this to be true. As a human being, I feel it to be true! We have developed a discomfort with the sacred and we need to be reminded that awareness of it has always, always been a part of human life. You beautifully merge ancient and modern traditions in this article, and make it sound easy to find one’s own sacred space.
Thank you so much Chara, your comment made my heart smile. xo
Lisa Marie, I love having sacred spaces everywhere and especially encourage my clients to create them in their offices – the more personalized the better. Everyone has different ways of expressing their innermost desires so I love that there is no “wrong” way to create a sacred space. I have an altar in my home office for my overall intentions and then a blessing boy for special events. Right now he holds the intentions from a group event I attended last Friday. My sacred space mixes elements from all religions and even some non-religious items that have been made sacred through blessing. Everyone can benefit from a sacred space. Even children make altars. Even though we have a new kitten, my daughter has made a small altar to her cat who died last summer. Kids are just vibrationally in tune like we breathe air. Sacred spaces can help us grown-ups come back home to ourselves.
Oh Catherine I couldn’t agree with you more. I LOVE that your little one is already creating altars and I too have different altars for different purposes. When I think about it, my entire home is a altar!! Thank you for your beautiful suggestions too! xo
